INGO 2004 Conference

Nexus International, and a host of African community organisations are organising for the first time, an African “Third Sector” conference on theme: The Third Sector, Overseas Missions in UK, Innovation & African Development that will bring together African Overseas Missions in the UK, African development organisations, international NGOs, and philanthropic individuals from Africa. This conference will also celebrate the positive role of Africans in their own development, and to explore ways by which a reasonable framework and level of co-operation and collaborative networks could be established.

Relative to world development, millions of people in Africa live in grave disadvantage. There is a need to address the situation and also find ways forward in a collaborative manner. This requires creative collaboration between African civil society organisations and Embassies/High Commissions based in the UK.

Role of African Ambassadors: There is a need for African Embassies and High Commissions in the West to embrace a wider civic role in society is a major factor in mobilising resources and expertise for development. The Consulates are well placed to Support the work of African NGO’s; Promote dialogue, co-operation, and understanding in North and South NGO relations; and open avenues within the EU commissions and international donor agencies for their respective countries’ third section organisations. The interactive part of this conference will advocate the placement of NGO attaches in all African diplomatic missions worldwide.

Role of UK based organisations: UK based agencies and organizations have for a number of years contributed generously towards development work in Africa, and it is important that their senior representatives or executives are given the opportunity to participate in this consultation. The UK consultation will also offer an invaluable opportunity for the delegates from Southern NGO’s to observe the operations of Northern development agencies such as BOND member agencies, DFID offices and CAF units.

For this conference, we have invited the following: African Consulates based in the UK and Europe; African NGOs and community based organisations (CBOs); Faith Based Groups, African NGOs and community groups based in the UK; International non-governmental organisations; UN agencies and multilateral institutions; donor organisations

Nexus and participating organisations have identified the following core issues and themes for discussions during the conference. They include:
